Late to the Party: Schitt’s Creek, Season Five
In what has become unfortunately characteristic of me these past few days, I am writing this dangerously close to my bedtime.
To read my initial thoughts on beloved Canadian sitcom Schitt’s Creek, please visit my first Late to the Party post. To preserve my bedtime rituals and to make sure I have plenty to talk about in the inevitable Schitt’s Creek wrap-up post that will be coming in the next day or two, here is a bullet point list of my thoughts on season five:
Dustin Milligan continues to absolutely SHINE as Alexis’ doting boyfriend, Dr. Ted Mullens. He reminds me of other sitcom characters who start out slightly vague but grow more developed and funnier as the show continues and the writers figure out what they’re doing with them, such as Winston in New Girl.
Patrick’s high school themed house warming party was fucking hilarious. Jealous Patrick and Alexis were the comedic duo I never knew I needed.
Sorry this is turning into an Alexis and Ted relationship-centric list, but when David left them in charge of the store and they tried to role play a sexy package boy situation and broke the bathroom sink I was howling with laughter.
We will now transition to this list being a David and Patrick relationship-centric list, but the episode where Patrick comes out to his parents had me curled up in a ball on my couch and bawling.
The tears continued to flow freely during their proposal, even though I saw it from approximately a thousand miles away. I’m a big softie!
The entire Cabaret arc gave me life. Seeing Moira so invested in Stevie, even if it was a bit selfish, was really beautiful and I feel like her character has grown so much this season.
I really hope my neighbors don’t think I’m insane because the sounds that came out of my body watching Noah Reid playing Patrick playing the Emcee and Emily Hampshire playing Stevie playing Sally Bowles were animalistic but I was so happy to be watching a FICTIONAL COMMUNITY THEATRE PRODUCTION OF CABARET and I just couldn’t help myself. They were having fun, I was having fun. It was delightful!
All in all, this little TV show has thawed my frozen heart on this bitterly freezing Brooklyn day. I don’t want to watch season six because I don’t want it to be over, but also acknowledge that I will likely be done with it by Saturday at the latest. Good night everybody.
